In 1967, 23-year-old Second Lieutenant L. Adrien Hannus of Wichita Kansas, arrived in Vietnam to begin his one-year tour of duty. A commissioned Army officer in military intelligence, Hannus found himself reassigned to Phoenix, a new CIA counterinsurgency program designed to oust and assassinate communist operatives living in South Vietnamese villages. Hannus was suddenly thrust into a combined combat infantry and military intelligence position, living and working with South Vietnamese troops and participating in frequent operations, 197 of which involved hostile fire. In A VC Water Buffalo, Hannus presents a series of vignettes that illustrate the adaptive strategies he used while living through a year in a war zone. His experiences range from trading booze for bullets and building supplies to grappling with acts of human aggression that had once seemed inconceivable.
