The present work introduces the student to leading facets of medieval history and civilization and provides select bibliographies for further reading. It concentrates on Europe during the Middle Ages, but includes detailed information that must be added by the professor, as well as provide a comprehensive survey and useful reference. Its increased size, will, it is hoped, be compensated for by the fuller information it makes readily available and the valuable time it saves.

This study is based on the labors and insights of numerous distinguished historical scholars, to whom we are, to use a medieval expression, "as pygmies perched on the shoulders of giants." It is dedicated both to all who have made it possible and to all who will use it. Included are colleagues, teachers, students, administrators, the publisher, and especially the author's patient family. As a result of its mode of division, the text is easily adaptable to various types of courses in medieval history and civilization. Although there are many ways of subdividing its subject, the present work prefers the simple one of "Foundations," "Early Middle Ages," "High Middle Ages," and "Later Middle Ages."
