South Dakota's pioneer history was rich with horse thieves, con artists, snake oil salesmen and the like. Whether from necessity or orneriness, some of our first citizens felt they needed to break laws just to claw out a living on the prairie. Our ancestors who lived outside of polite society's expectations make for some of South Dakota's best stories.
