This study has been designed to give the reader a complete overview of Frederick Manfred's work, including brief summaries of each book followed by comments which will identify themes and point up significant aspects. The commentaries are intended more as explicative criticism than as evaluative, as indicators of scholarly possibilities rather than as definitive statements on the books.

Titles are not arranged chronologically but rather according to categories which Manfred has found useful in discussing his work. The novels are primarily an interpretation of the farming experience in Siouxland; the tales have a base in historical events which happened during the nineteenth century in and around Siouxland; the rumes are basically autobiographical; the romances are complex explorations of personalities caught in contrasting rural and urban settings; and the stories and poems develop themes similar to those explored in the longer works. In Chapter Five, major themes are identified and traced through the works as a whole, and in the postscript, a brief evaluation is made of the Manfred career to date.
