It's the fall of 1944 when twelve-year-old identical twins Pearl and Stasha Zamorski are sent Auschwitz with their mother and grandfather. Catching the eye of the infamous "Angel of Death", Dr. Josef Mengele, the sisters are sent to a separate barracks called the "the Zoo", where they are the subject of unspeakable experiments. But they are also aided in their fight for survival by other prisoners, such as the maternal Miri, a Jewish doctor now forced to work alongside Mengele; Bruna, a spirited young thief; Feliks, a rebellious child grieving his own terrible loss; and Peter an unexpected ally with access to the camp's black market.

That winter, Pearl vanishes. Stasha is tormented by her absence but insists Pearl is still alive. Stasha dreams of reunion, fortified by thoughts of vengeance. Though the sisters are separated, their bond endures, an unassailable tribute to love and family and the hope of living once again - not as children who have been wounded, but as survivors who cannot be broken.
