"As a professional soldier, I was involved in both World Wars, and I am the sole survivor among three senior officers who commanded large combat units in the second World War in both the Pacific and European theaters. I was Chief of Staff of the United States Army and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the entire Korean War, after which I was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as Special Representative of the United States in Vietnam. On completion of this mission I reverted to my post as the American representative on the Standing Group of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization until my retirement from the United States Army, March 31, 1956.
