Verses in Scandinavian dialect, which the author says should be familiar to the 'lumberyacks' of Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. But to other readers, such terms as "skol" (shall or will), "ban" (been), "panga" (money), "sum" (than or as), may convey little or no meaning." William Frederick Kirk, (1877 - 1927), born in Mankato, Minnesota, was an American baseball writer, columnist, humorist, poet and songwriter. His ethnic poetry played on the notion, probably engendered by their English pronunciation, that Scandinavian-Americans were good-natured but a little slow - more heart than brain. This humorous stereotype was also employed in other forms: vaudeville sketches, joke books, movies, records and sheet music. Surprisingly, it was well received, and especially by the very ethnic group that was being satirized, who seemed to accept it in good fun.
