This book, the first field guide on wildflowers of North Dakota to feature color photographs, has been written for individuals who enjoy the beauty of wild plants and want to learn more about them. It is a useful source of information o the varied and interesting plants of the prairies and woodlands of the state. Described and illustrated are 159 species that have conspicuous flowers; plants with inconspicuous flowers such as grasses and sedges have been omitted.
The species are conveniently organized by flower colored and arranged in the sequence of approximate flowering time from spring onwards. Each species is represented by a color photograph and a concise description of size, growth pattern, leaf arrangement, flower structure, habitats occupied, and other details. Each photograph has been placed on the page opposite the description for the ease in identification. Beside each description is a map showing distribution of the species in the spate and a bar diagram showing the approximate time of the year when the species in bloom. The book contains a diagram illustrating the main structural features of leaves and flowers, a glossary giving brief explanations of the meaning of technical terms, and separate indexes to common and scientific names.
